Cianbro Presents: Veranda Street Bridge Replacement Project

Ways of Working

Cianbro served as the general contractor/construction manager for the Veranda Street Bridge Replacement, a three-phase accelerated bridge construction project on one of Maine’s busiest stretches of highway. The Veranda Street Bridge carries I-295 over Veranda Street in Portland, Maine. The existing bridge, built in 1961, was deteriorating after decades of heavy use. The project was unique because the team used self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs) to replace the old bridge, allowing the team to build the new bridge safely away from active traffic and with minimal disruption to motorists. Once preparations were complete, the old bridge was demolished, and the new northbound and southbound structures were lifted and rolled into place in a single weekend.
